Chapter 15

With Mugs on a leash, Goliath running along beside her, and Thaddeus curled up on her shoulder, complaining the whole time, she headed down the river to all the properties along the lake. It was just one of those things generally thought of the high and mighty as living on waterfront properties. Yet some megamillion-dollar properties were up in the hills behind as well. She couldn’t be sure, but there was some mention about Lakeshore.

Now Lakeshore was down and around the corner, but she’d gone along the river and across an access path. There were cut-offs over to Lakeshore Road and definitely some spaces where she could get to the beach, but walking along the beach—although it was supposed to be available to the public—wasn’t always that easy to walk along without encountering barriers.

A lot of people had put up docks to try and discourage the public from walking on their beachfronts. She was pretty sure they weren’t allowed to do that, but, hey, it was kind of standard for places like this.

As she headed along the lake, she cut back along Bluebird and continued to walk. Lakeshore could go two directions, and this was one of them, and it went all the way down to where it split—half heading down along the lake again and the other half of the traffic going up the hill to Upper Mission. An awful lot of traffic headed in that direction. She knew it was popular because the views were absolutely to die for.

In her case, however, she was looking for some of those very large properties a little farther down the road. As it was a gorgeous day, and she thoroughly enjoyed the walk, she quickly realized that she had gone a bit farther than she’d intended to.

Frowning, she stopped at the entrance to a street called Hobson and waited for it to click in her brain as being one of the richer well-to-do areas. With a nod, she headed down there. As she walked, she passed several other people. One lady was walking a dog in a carriage. Doreen stopped to admire the dog.

“He’s old,” the woman shared, with a gentle smile, “but I just can’t put him down yet.”

“As long as he’s not suffering, why would you?” she asked, with a bright smile. “He looks totally happy.”

“He is, indeed.”

The older lady seemed grateful maybe for the conversation but definitely was not up for somebody judging her. “Matter of fact, is he friendly?” Doreen asked. “I’d love to pet him.”

“He’s quite friendly,” she replied.

At that Doreen squatted in front of the carriage and talked to the dog. His tail wagged multiple times. Mugs, not to be outdone, jumped up beside her and stuffed his nose over the top of the carriage to sniff the dog. “No, you’re not getting a buggy like that at all,” Doreen told him firmly.

The other lady laughed. “This is your dog?”

“It is.” She smiled up at her. “We’ve been together all of his life too. It’ll break my heart when it’s time for him to go.
